What’s Wrong With Being A Call Center Agent In The Philippines?

The Philippines has been known as the “Pearl of the Orient Seas.” In the modern times, the Philippines has been known to be the land of great talents (in the context of Asia’s Got Talent), the Venezuela of Asia (in the limelight of international pageantry) and even as the land of corruption (in the realm of politics). But we cannot deny the fact that amidst these distinct aliases, Philippines is now the call center capital of the world.

According to the LA Times, this growth is widely attributed to “The combination of cheap labor and specialized skills has made the Filipino workforce invaluable to a growing list of U.S. companies, which use them to field customer complaints, generate sales leads, code data, format documents and read medical scans and legal briefs.”

But despite the help of BPOs to the personal lives of its employees and the growth of the society as whole, we cannot deny the fact that being in a BPO is highly looked down by other people. Why? Some people only think of BPO jobs as a no-brainer. Some people think that people who venture in BPO have no choice in terms of choosing their preferred career as they do not practice their course when they were in college.

Take this screenshot of a Facebook status which I was able to stumble upon. This was allegedly from a Jeffrey Lapuz.

I tried to look for his online account but there are plenty of searches that show up that do not correspond to the profile picture that was used in the screenshot.

Could this be a form of online bullying towards this person? Or could the user, Jeffrey Lapuz, deleted his Facebook account or changed his profile picture to avoid cyber bullying?

Your thoughts.
