Watch The World Clearly YET Affordably At Paterno St. Quiapo

Note: I did not bother to take photos using my phone or bring my DSLR. I find it scary to do so in that place. So all photos here are grabbed from Google and their references or otherwise stated with my watermark.

It’s the time of 13th-month pay. It’s already about a time where we can pay our credit card debts, invest in smart investment, save for gifts this Christmas, buy new gadgets and buy a new pair of an eyeglass. Yes, you heard me right, a pair of eyeglass!

This is probably one of the problems faced by people who are “four-eyed.” And I am just fortunate that I was able to get to know the infamous haven of affordable eyeglass, Paterno St. Carriedo in Quiapo.

I can no longer remember the right pace of changing an eyeglass or at least the accepted one. When I bought my first eyeglass with my own money, I said that I will never buy a new one not unless if it will be really tormented so hard that a Mighty Bond can no longer do the help. LOL. This is probably the same alibi of those young professionals, working students like me—to save money for other things.

I bought my first eyeglass at Executive Optical way back 2011. It cost me around P7,000 inclusive of the checkup, Dior Christian frame and the lens which were made to be really ultra thin (I have 500 grade and 200 astigmatisms thus it’s really that thick).

My Dior eyeglass withstood my pagiging “burara” and it survived with some bend here, bend there and a little bit of Mighty Bond. But after 3 years, my eyeglass was already ready to resign. So when I got hold of my 13th-month pay, I decided to alloting money to invest in a pair of an eyeglass.

Good thing, a friend of mine referred me to Paterno St. Carriedo near Quiapo. I considered it as another Divisoria in the making but mostly for eyeglasses. And I must admit, got a good deal on my new pair for just P3,000 all in all. (I will be providing the distribution on it at the end of the blog).

How to go to Paterno St. Carriedo.

Note: If you would like to do away with the hassle of commuting from one bus to another jeep and another bus, I suggest for you to take MRT and LRT.

  1. Take the MRT going to Pasay.
  2. From MRT, transfer to LRT 1. Just ask the guards where it’s located.
  3. Buy a ticket going to Carriedo Station.
  4. Walk going to Quiapo Church.
  5. Pass thru the church to the other side and ask where Paterno St. is.
  6. Usually, the landmarks you will see are BPI and Chowking. From there, the line of eye store extends to further going in the street.

Since it was raining during the time that I went there, I only visited the nearest store right beside Chowking. Here are some tips that can be helpful once you go there.

  1. If it’s raining, buy wet tissue so once you are in a dry place you can remove the dirt in your slippers and your feet. But that’s the same problem you will face going back. LOL
  2. Withdraw cash in your office or in the LRT station before going there. If you forgot, which happened to me, visit BPI nearest to Chowking. Just be cautious.
  3. Haggle with the store assistants. They will surely give you what you need or choose another store if your budget isn’t arrived at.

Cost of a pair of eyeglass:

  • P800 – my officemate (Thanks, Jo Decena) sold me the Replay Frame I used for my new pair of an eyeglass. The usual price in the Philippines is around P5,000. You can also get frames in Paterno St. for as low as P350-P3,000. Mostly, frames are class A. quality is also good.

  • P2,500 to P2,300 – The cost of the transition lens (these are the eyeglass that usually turns to a darker shade once exposed to sunlight) is usually higher compared to malls. I heard from a friend that he got his for P14,000!! Gosh! But I got it for P2,200. Why? The power of haggling. Plus, I had a box of crinkles during that time that I offered to the assistant and ophthalmologist who assisted me.

So for just P3,000, I already have a quality pair of eyeglass that has a nice frame and transition lens. you can still haggle and look for frames and lens that will suit your budget in Paterno St. in Quiapo. Perhaps, the farther you go from the first store, you might stumble upon more affordable glasses.

(Quite disappointed with the tax associated with your 13th month pay? Check out the Hymn of a Taxpayer.)

Spend your 13th month pay wisely. For those who are like me who are very thrifty and are in need of a new pair of eyeglass, visit Paterno St. and your 13th month will go a mile and have a cleared future ahead of you, literally.
