Valkyrie Nightclub: Elitism Over Equality?

‘Super sexy’ transgenders can’t enter Valkyrie

MANILA, Philippines – Transgenders can enter Manila’s newest party destination, Valkyrie, in Taguig City, but they would have to dress “decent.”

In a blogpost by baklapoako.com, it featured a Facebook post of Mico Lloren which reports an incident last February 28 when his transgender friend was denied access to Valkyrie at The Palace at the Bonifacio Global City.

The blogpost is titled “Is Valkyrie Nightclub (of Vice Ganda) the new anti-LGBT bar in the Philippines? How ironic.”

Philstar.com inquired about the policy through Valkyrie’s hotline 0917-680 888, and the onduty receptionist named Monique confirmed that they do not allow cross-dressers to enter the club.

Asked again for confirmation, Monique clarified that a transgender can still be allowed to enter the club “as long as medyo decent naman daw po ang suot.”

Monique said that by saying decent, they mean “not super sexy” or “not too daring.”

“We allow crossdressers basta huwag lang po daring na iyong tipong mababastos sila,” the receptionist said.

Asked if girls can dress sexy, the receptionist said: “Okay lang naman po, as long as…”

Mico Lloren, in his Facebook post, said the Valkyrie management wanted “her (his transgender friend) to wear pants since her ID is showing ‘Male’ and my friend was wearing super sexy yellow dress showing her cleavage.”

Mico said that instead of arguing with the Valkyrie people, their group just walked away and went to Raven Club.

“Still it STUNG! There was no way to interpret ‘dress code’ as anything other than another way of saying ‘STAY OUT, TRANNIES. Had this legitimately been about some sort of dress code, why did the bouncer even bothered looking at her ID in the first place,” Mico added in his post.

This was the article posted by PhilStar on March 4, 2015, in relation to my article “Is Valkyrie Nightclub (of Vice Ganda) the new anti-LGBT bar in the Philippines? How ironic.” Thank you PhilStar for getting the side of Valkyrie through Monique. But here are some things that are quite vague:

1. You cannot equate decency to wearing pants in clubs specially if you are a transwoman.

According to Mico Lloren, the exact words that were told to them by the guard and a manager named John was “male ka kasi sa ID, you should wear pants, closed shoes, and jacket.” But Naz said that she is a transwoman. And that she is not a male. But the Valkyrie staff insisted that since it was indicated in Naz’s ID that she is a male, then she must follow the dress code.

So how about the case of a hard butch who has been barred from entering the place? So should they wear clothes for women too?

2. Natural born women can wear a sexy dress while transwomen cannot.

“We allow crossdressers basta huwag lang po daring na iyong tipong mababastos sila,” the receptionist said.

Asked if girls can dress sexy, the receptionist said: “Okay lang naman po, as long as…”

Logic please. It doesn’t make sense. Really.

3. Is transwoman synonymous with prostitution? You think so? We don’t.

By the looks of it, Valkyrie Nightclub management is barring “sexy” transwomen probably because they are avoiding a new case of Jennifer Laude, are they?

“So pag transgender, prosti agad? We, the transwomen, are being badly stereotyped.” – Naz

What century are we in again? Transwomen nowadays are hard working people just like any of us. They are professional make-up artists, corporate executives, teachers, fashion gurus, business owners, TED talk speakers and the like. In short, they are just like any one of us who long for happiness and are human too. So why are we stereotyping them in the first place?

4. There is too much elitism in the LGBT community

What is quite disturbing in our society right now specifically on this current issue at hand is the elitism that is taking its toll on our community. OK then, Valkyrie has its own rules when it comes to their dress code. Granted that it is the thing that they fight for in this specific issue, but how come other transwomen were able to enter the establishment when they too have even “sexier” dress than Naz?

Margaux Medina.

And this is Naz when she was barred entering Valkyrie Nightclub:

What is the difference among Kevin, Margaux and Naz? It is elitism. It is the connection that other does not have. You decide if we are making a sense here.

We have already raised the concern of Mico and Naz regarding the incident against Valkyrie. And Valkyrie already answered the blog with answers that branched out more questions at hand. Maybe the answer is quite obvious. It is elitism over equality. ‘Nuff said.
