Sensification: Creating Ideas For A “Greener” Philippines

It is not every day that I write blogs about sustainable energy issues. But when I do so, it is with a positive change of heart and a constant reminder of climate change, both literally and figuratively, that makes me talk more about it in the long run.

In the bigger picture, climate change has led to different environmental concerns like numerous deadly typhoons hitting the Philippines and economic concerns like its effect on the threat of our food security. On a personal level, going out during the day proves of how climate change has been a nascent concern for all of us. With the high temperature, the struggle is real for many Filipinos.

Fortunately, I was able to attend Sensification: Idea Creation Workshop connected with Impact Hub Manila’s Fellowship on Sustainable Energy Solution wherein prime movers of sustainable energy in the country as well as environmentalists were able to share their ideas on the said issue.

I was able to talk with Sam Kapunan before the program started. Sam told me about her ongoing project for sustainable energy called iSense.

iSense is the name of a product line of Pixillusion Technologies, Inc., an innovative company founded in the Philippines. The iSense product line was designed and developed to offer economical solutions in Facilities Management and Home Security. It has since evolved to include cost-effective add-ons to energy management and facilities environment monitoring.

Customized variants of iSense have been deployed by customers accross the Philippines. From security related variants to telecom installations, iSense has proven to be a cost-effective solution to the different concerns of the different customers who have availed of iSense.

In addition, how could this event be of more value if not a “Green Man” wouldn’t grace and share his connection with Mother Earth?

The Green Man, Matthias Gelber, discussing his environmental efforts in the Philippines. Are you wondering why the photo seems dark? It’s because he asked to turn off the lights and makes use of ambient light in the office to decrease carbon footprint while we do the seminar. He doesn’t have a presentation as well to do away using the LCD projector.

Matthias Gelber, better known as the ‘Green Man’, is a professional speaker, green activist, eco-warrior and key advocate for a pro-environment living. He is voted the ‘Greenest Person on the Planet’ on 2008.

Matthias discussed his efforts that he is doing in contributing less for the carbon footprint. Moreover, he discussed how the Philippines can benefit from largely from the “NegaWatt Revolution.”

A negawatt is a negative megawatt: a megawatt of power saved by increasing efficiency or reducing consumption. Physicist Amory Lovins coined the term and introduced it in a speech in 1989.

And he mentioned that the Philippines has a high geothermal energy making carbon footprint lesser compared to other countries.

In the latter part of the program was pitching the ideas that we can come up with connected with sustainable energy efforts in the Philippines. Here are what we came up with.

The group one pitched a project for a “Smart Home.” In here, they suggested that the main problem with many Filipino homes right now is that they weren’t “smart” in the first place. And only those well-off people staying in condos have the access to a “smart home” because it is very expensive as of present time. With the smart home, one can be able to control your appliances and utilities, even remotely with the use of an electrical system.

Furthermore, the group 2 presented their “NegaWatt Revolution” Project. The project did not come as a surprise since Sam and Matthias were also part of the said group. With their partnership and their vision of using “energy that you don’t use energy,” then perhaps then we can feel this revolution in the Philippines anytime soon.

On the other hand, our group made up of Marlon and Christine thought of using Biomass of generating electricity especially for remote farming communities where agricultural wastes are abundant.

The attendees of the Fellowship on Sustainable Energy Solutions.

As Jamais Cascio puts it, “Preventing global warming from becoming a planetary catastrophe may take something even more drastic than renewable energy, superefficient urban design, and global carbon taxes.” But with this kind of initiatives for a better and greener Philippines, I think we are half way there.
