In the last HIV/AIDS Registry Report of the Philippines (as of January 2019), there were 1,249 newly confirmed HIV-positive individuals reported. Almost a third (32%, 402 cases) were from the National Capital Region (NCR). Region 4A (18%, 228 cases), Region 3 (9%, 114 cases), Region 7 (8%, 97 cases), and Region 6 (7%, 92 cases), comprised the top 5 regions with the most number of newly diagnosed cases for the month, together accounting for 74% of the total.
The rise of HIV cases each month could be rooted in the fact that more and more people are becoming conscious of the importance of getting to know their status. After all, we are already in 2019 where HIV SHOULD BE talked about in the open to educate more people about it. NCR, which is a populous region, takes the big chunk of cases obviously. It is followed by Region 4A and Region 3.
This alarming increase in HIV cases should not be given a blind eye and a deaf ear. Especially for provinces or regions which consider this kind of timely causes as taboo. Fortunately, the Rotary Club of Downtown Olongapo, headed by President Mary Grace Mana-ay, spearheaded its first “HIV Awareness and Prevention Seminar” in Olongapo City. With the club’s area of focus specifically on disease prevention and treatment, the RCDO taps another worthy cause especially for the minority group, the MSM (males having sex with males).
To further its thrust, the RCDO’s seminar aims to alleviate the stigma surrounding HIV through educating people about it and at the same time in using the digital space for a sex-positive and informative place to talk about HIV.
Join the Rotary Club of Downtown Olongapo with its 1st “HIV Awareness and Prevention Seminar” that will be held on April 27, 2019 at RMT Restobar, Olongapo City.
The speakers of the seminar include Mr. Jeron L. Osiana, the founder of Red Tent Philippines, and Mr. Joemar Belleza, an HIV awareness blogger and owner of BaklaPoAko.Com. Both are DOH-Certified HIV Counselors.
If you want to join the “HIV Awareness and Prevention Seminar,” you can contact Joemar Belleza at 09338572551 for the ticket. Ticket price is for P350 inclusive of the food and certificate.
