“Mga Batang Poz” Will Confront Your Misconceptions About HIV

You try and talk about HIV/AIDS out in the open and surely you will be flooded by a deluge of raised brows, silent mockery, and an incessant alibi to keep it out from coming through the light. This is the normal scenario of how HIV awareness campaigns are working here in the Philippines. We are not yet so open to talking about something that is quite controversial. No wonder, as of 2018, there are 31 individuals contracting HIV every day. That’s quite alarming compared to the previous statistics.

These numbers speak so much of our attitude towards this issue as a country. It is quite hard to talk about it when we don’t want to talk about it. But how the launch of J.M. Matias’ “Mga Batang Poz” will finally change that. Well, hopefully.

J.M. Matias, also known as Segundo Matias Jr., is an acclaimed and best-selling author. He’s also a Palanca-awardee who, through his controversial novel, provided a platform to promote HIV awareness and prevention among MSM and other high-risk segments of the society.

In order to fulfill this daunting task, he launched his book “Mga Batang Poz” last September 28, 2018 under Lampara Publishing House.

“Mga Batang Poz” is Matias’ latest foray into pop culture lit in an emotionally gripping account of four teenagers afflicted with HIV. The story grows in poignancy as the characters reveal something about their lives throughout the journey, finding comfort and solace in each other’s harrowing experiences and in return, helping them realize the beauty of life and friendship underneath the suffering.

“Mga Batang Poz” is the first young adult novel about HIV/AIDS in the Philippines and a game-changer in the literary front as it singlehandedly confronts misconceptions about the disease. It marks an important step forward in understanding the lives of People Living With HIV (PLHIV), exploring in greater depth the characters’ lives in the age of social media and dating hookup apps.

The author considers the book as a personal advocacy to educate young readers about the stigma and discrimination against HIV/AIDS. And at the same time to raise sexual health awareness affecting the LGBTQ community at large.

– Segundo Matis Jr.

Segundo Matias, Jr. is a bold writer. In confronting the alarming rate of HIV infection in the country, he zeroes in on youth and social media, young lives about to break into pieces. he lays bare the various shadings of reckleness, the unexpected comfort, the terror, the rage, and the desire to find true connections and real blis.

An expert in telling stories targeted to a younger demographic, Matias wrote “Mga Batang Poz” as part of his graduate thesis in the University of the Philippines Diliman, where he is determined to come up with a Young Adult novel tackling a highly controversial subject that a lot of people are afraid to discuss in public.
