Is Valkyrie Nightclub (Of Vice Ganda) The New Anti-LGBT Bar In The Philippines? How Ironic

Would you believe that the Philippines has been ranked as the “most gay-friendly country in Asia?”

The vast majority of Filipinos – 73 percent – declared that “society should accept homosexuality”, according to findings from “The global divide on homosexuality” survey by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center. The survey, published in 2013, covered seven countries from the Asia-Pacific region: Philippines, South Korea, China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Pakistan (listed in order from most to least gay-friendly).

But the title of Philippines as a gay-friendly nation is still under question especially of the hate crimes that are still rampant nowadays especially concerning the Transgender people.

While hovering through my newsfeed in Facebook, I saw one post of my friend, Mico Lloren, of an unlikely incident of Valkyrie Nightclub towards them especially to our transwoman friend, Naz.

Here is the screenshot:

Does this scenario ring a bell from your memory?

Well, it reminded me of some of these cases:

The Jonathan Agudaña Case: The first ever known trans human rights complaint in the Philippines

The Jonathan Agudaña Case is the first ever known case involving a trans person filed with the Philippine Commission on Human Rights.

Sometime in 2000, a human rights complaint was filed by the Gay Movement for Human Rights in the Philippines (GAHUM-Philippines) on behalf of Jonathan Agudaña who was barred on two separate occasions from entering a dance club in Cebu City for wearing women’s clothes and sandals. The complaint claimed that Jonathan Agudaña was discriminated because of her “sexual orientation”. The dance club defended itself by saying that they don’t discriminate against gays. They even said that they have lots of gay patrons. They just don’t allow cross-dressing in their bar. The case was dismissed on the 11th of January 2001.

Or how about this:

Inday Garutay slapped anti-gay restaurant with a civil suit

On July 4, 2006, Inday Garutay entered Aruba Restaurant in Metrowalk Commercial Complex to meet with a friend and a producer for a show in Japan. She was accompanied by her partner. After using the ladies toilet, she was reportedly asked to leave the restaurant by the Supervisor, Ms. “Tintin” Aguilar. Aguilar allegedly told Inday Garutay that Aruba has a dress code and that cross-dressers like her are prohibited from entering the establishment. (“Mayroon po kaming dress code dito. Bawal po ang cross-dresser. Bawal po ang ganyang katulad mo.“). Because Aguilar was unrelenting, Inday decided to leave.

Inday Garutay said that she suffered mental anguish, sleepless nights and anxiety attacks because of the incident.

It also pains to find out that one of the investors of the said “homophobic” Valkyrie Nightclub is Vice Ganda, one of the infamous and highest-paid openly gay endorsers in the country. But how come transgenders are supposed to follow a dress code that is not in line with their gender identity?

Another complaint from a transman against Valkyrie Nightclub.

Inequality in a supposed place of equality?

It is quite  also an intriguing juxtaposition of one fact that came out. How on earth did Kevin Balot, Miss International Queen 2012 and a close ally for transgender women in the Philippines, was able to enter Valkyrie Nightclub in an obviously same dress that Naz wore?

Look:

Photos are taken from Kevon Balot’s Twitter account. Plunging neckline, eh? With Vice Ganda, investor of Valkyrie and some other transpinay of the same sort of beautiful yet “taboo” outfits as the guard regarded Naz’s.

This was Naz’s outfit when they initially went to Valkyrie Nightclub. I think it’s just the same with what the trans were wearing. But why wasn’t she allowed to enter Valkyrie Nightclub?

Obviously, our country is not a “gay-friendly” nation as Pew Research Center has found out before. The Philippines is only a “tolerant” country where LGBT is just tolerated because LGBT exists–but not fully accepted. And obviously, there is a very thin line that separates tolerance and acceptance.
