The rainbow’s end didn’t stop with “gay” Google Doodle this February. It was seconded by the biggest social networking site, Facebook, by integrating new gender options.

More than 50 gender identities were introduced in Facebook’s platform especially for users who would like to deviate from defining themselves from either “male” or “female.” It’s good as saying na hindi na lang bakla po ako, period; it’s now synonymous to users being specific what they would like to be tagged into.

And it doesn’t stop there. Facebook users can now choose their desired pronoun to address them online. The pronoun “they” is already added in addition to “she” and “he.” So if gusto mo na neutral lang ang tawag saiyo sa Facebook, then “they” can be an alternative.

In line with this, Facebook Diversity Page had their official statement:

“When you come to Facebook to connect with the people, causes, and organizations you care about, we want you to feel comfortable being your true, authentic self. An important part of this is the expression of gender, especially when it extends beyond the definitions of just “male” or female.” So today, we’re proud to offer a new custom gender option to help you better express your own identity on Facebook.”

I can really feel that LGBT community has been slowly accepted especially in this contemporary period. And with the surge of technology and all its domino effects in our society, it’s no longer a dream that we can just tell the world that: “Bakla po ako. Confirmed!”
