Fighting Sadness With Fitness
My closest friends can vouch for me when I say that I can indeed turn my scars into stars. After the breakup of my very first boyfriend, I swore to have a vengeance and I gave him a “cum laude” award when I graduated from college. Then came my second breakup, and I gave him the job offer of my then-dream job with JPMorgan Chase & Co. But the recent breakup that I had sent me rock bottom. Probably because I love him so much but also it was the longest relationship I had so far for more than 5 years.
But life must go on and there are more to life than just wallowing with what could’ve been, should’ve been, and would’ve been. Now, I have the luxury of time to do all of the things that I like and more especially to better myself. Hence, I enrolled in a gym to fight sadness with fitness.
As early as now, I want you to understand that I am not, in any way, doing this for me to get even with my then partner or do something to have him back. I honor his decision and I wish him the happiness that he deserves. I am enjoying my life to the fullest now and as I’ve mentioned there is no place for hate in my heart. I am doing this to better myself as a young adult, be healthy, and perhaps fully realize my dream of joining Mr. Gay World. LOL. I mean, everything is possible, right?
Anyway, I enrolled at Fitness First in MOA but I normally workout and attend classes at Fitness First The Fort. You might ask, why Fitness First? To start with, I scouted and visited the nearest branches of both Gold’s Gym and Anytime Fitness. And by the way, these two are both just right across the office where I work at. But it is in Fitness First that I kind of felt the urge to really entrust my transformation. This is so since most of my friends before always bring me as a guest in Fitness First and I can really feel that, indeed, they prioritize your fitness first.
I joined Fitness First by shelling out Php8,720. Inclusive of this total amount are the Passport Membership Type (Php2,980) that is payable every month, Joining Fee of Php2,000, Admin Fee of Php1,500, and the Kickstart10 (10×60 minutes PT sessions) for Php8,720. But you might wonder that the total amount does not sum up to the amount I paid in full. If I can remember it correctly, they had a promo during that time.
I chose the Passport Membership Type as the Platinum is not really practical for me. Such membership only offers the same benefits with the other membership type but with added perks like towel and gym clothes when you go to a Platinum branch and pool. I don’t think that I will need any of these sooner than later so I opted the Passport type. As its name suggest, you can pretty much work out on different Fitness First branches except for Platinum.
So let’s start my journey fighting sadness with fitness. I started working out on January 18, 2017. I personally asked my friend and a Fitness First trainer, Aiki, to give me a female PT. If there is homophobia, I have this “straightophobia” (yes, I just made that up) of the irrational fear of straight guys. I was avoiding homophobic tendencies that might arise if I am given with a straight male PT. But lo and behold! I was informed that my PT is male and yes, he is a straight guy. His name is Dante Requinala.
Dante and his expertise. He has been working as a PT for more than 10 years. So you pretty much can say that he is an expert when it comes to fitness. Hence, put your trust in his able hands.
He failed my expectation, BIG TIME. I wasn’t expecting him to be the usual straight cool male who thinks that all gays are after him. Instead, he’s very professional, always on time, and courteous–even after the 10 sessions that we spent with each other. And I would really recommend him to gay men out there who would not want to be discriminated. He even gave me pieces of advice, especially when he shared that he also experienced the same fate that I was in. He’s actually like a big brother to me regardless if you’s straight or gay.
I started with him and I weighed 87kg. After two months, I am down to 80kg. Here’s the proof:
I was kind of scared to post this photo as I am not yet comfortable showing my body online. But I think that little progress can be an inspiration to others. And I think that I also deserved a gentle pat on my back for reaching this in my first 2 months. And I am positive to achieve more for the next months to come.
So many of my friends asked what I was doing to lose weight since my IG feed is flooded with my gymfie. By the way, you can follow me on IG here and I will follow you back, promise. So I told them about me going to the gym and also my new love, yoga. I actually came to know the yoga classes (Body Balance and Core Flow Yoga) by accident. And from then on, I always do cardio following the routine which I’ve learned from Dante and yoga classes under my cool teacher, Rolaine.

Rolaine is the best yoga teacher there is in Fitness First The Fort. With all due respect to the other yoga teachers who also happen to be my friends, Rolaine teaches with so much love for her craft and with the utmost consideration for her students. She proved to me that yoga is not actually for the flexible. But for the willing. I was willing so I can now flex. Plus, she’s the one taking photos of my dope yoga selfies. Do you need proof? I may be far from the goal that I have which is to be healthy instead of being ripped. But I know that with the continuous support from my family and friends and the encouragement that I get from my teachers, I know that I will also get there. So to those who are broken, you can fight sadness with fitness. It will be beneficial in the long run, after all. Wallow in tears of your need to. But later on, wallow in your sweat towards being awesome.
And by the way, I wasn’t able to answer how I turned my present scars into stars with the untimely and unfortunate breakup. Well, I just passed the licensure exam for Financial Advisors, got a scholarship under Ateneo program, on my final stage for the service scholarship for yoga certification in Thailand, got a raise from the office, and still waiting for the positive result of my scholarship application at School Of Fashion and the Arts. Now that’s how I make a vengeance out of it. 😉
