DepEd On Avoiding HIV: Avoid Having Sex With Homosexuals

HIV/AIDS & ART Registry of the Philippines (HARP) just released the latest statistics for the month of June. And it turns out that in June 2016, there were 841 new HIV antibody sero-positive individuals reported to the HIV/AIDS & ART Registry of the Philippines (HARP). This was 9% higher compared to the same period last year (772). This was the highest number of cases ever reported since 1984. Eighty-eight percent were asymptomatic at the time of reporting.

It may sound alarming but perhaps this data will also prove that more and more people are subjecting themselves to testing. After all, knowing one’s status is the best way of curbing the spread of HIV and also to treat oneself if they turn out to be reactive.

However, in other news, I saw a photo online from fellow HIV advocates of a photo apparently from DepEd telling its readers “How To Avoid HIV/AIDS?

Miseducation from the Department of Education? (CTTO: Gab Q. Espiritu)

Of course, netizens were quick in raising their opinion about the photo. Here’s one comment from Gab Espiritu.

Be honest with your partner. (Perhaps what they meant was being loyal to one’s partner and/or disclosing one’s HIV status to his/her partner). Check!

Use condom when having sexual intercourse. Check!

Educate yourself. (Perhaps pertaining to knowing information about HIV and how it’s transmitted and how to avoid it.) Check!

But wait a minute. I think the third “friendly reminder” from DepEd negates the point of “educating yourself.”

It’s kind of ironic that DepEd, an organization that must propagate education, is doing otherwise. Obviously, such information only stigmatizes HIV/AIDS instead of putting light to it. More so, it’s kind of weird that one of DepEd’s core values is being “maka-tao” yet propagating information that’s too inhumane especially for our PLHIV brothers and sisters.

What do you think of this material? Is it really legitimate and approved by DepEd or is this just a marketing strategy to outrage people?
