This instance happened to me during this year’s Good Friday when I went home to Sorsogon to spend the Holy Week with my family. I don’t know if it was just because of the fact that Sorsogon was considered as a “somewhat remote” province where discrimination against LGBT thrives at its finest or perhaps there are really homophobic priests who would not even give a fuck if they make use of the LGBT as a laughingstock even during the Holy Mass.

During the Homily.

Priest: Pag may mag mura sainyo and sabihin sainyo na “Demonyo ka!”, ang sagot dapat ay “I love you.” Pag may magsabi sainyo ng “I love you”, ang sagot ay “Salamat sa Diyos.” Sige practisin naten. Demonyo kayo!

(When someone tells you bad words and tell you “You’re a devil!,” the right answer is “I love you.” If someone tells you “I love you,” the answer is “Thanks be to God.” Okay then, let’s practice it. “You’re a devil!”)

Mob: I love you.

Priest: I love you!

Mob: Salamat sa Diyos. (“Thanks be to God.”)

Priest: Magaling! Kaya sabihan nyo ang mga katabi nyo ng “I love you.” Eh pano kung pareho pala kayo lalaki? (Then laughs as if he meant it as a joke).

Great! So tell you seatmates “I love you.” However, what if you’re both males? (Then laughs as if he meant it as a joke).

So this is how a priest must be acting up to let a clear message come across that the Christian community abhors same sex couples who are capable of loving the same way as our straight counterparts do? So the “church” proves itself as a channel of love and vessel of peace by being a place of discrimination instead of an inclusive place for believers of Christ–whether straight or homosexual? So you prove yourself to be “holy” under that cloak you wear and the judgment you gave us?

Now let me tell you why I gave still faith in the Catholic Church with what the pope once said–apart from my choice of continuously believing in God as my Father.

“On that occasion I said this: If a person is gay and seeks out the Lord and is willing, who am I to judge that person?” the pope once said. “I was paraphrasing by heart the Catechism of the Catholic Church where it says that these people should be treated with delicacy and not be marginalized.”

“I am glad that we are talking about ‘homosexual people’ because before all else comes the individual person, in his wholeness and dignity,” he continues. “And people should not be defined only by their sexual tendencies: let us not forget that God loves all his creatures and we are destined to receive his infinite love.”

“I prefer that homosexuals come to confession, that they stay close to the Lord, and that we pray all together,” says Francis. “You can advise them to pray, show goodwill, show them the way, and accompany them along it.”

Now, to those priests who are not doing the same, perhaps this can be a reminder for you to follow what your dear pope, a being whom you must follow the footsteps of, to be a bridge for us LGBT people to God. And not people who will cut the ropes and burn the bridges.

Now I understand why most of my LGBT brothers and sisters would rather detach from the church and directly pray to God. Now I know why.
