Day 7 at Maquillage Professionnel School of Makeup Artistry

Day 7 at Maquillage Professionnel School of Makeup Artistry, it is! And for today, what we have discussed in our class is all about “Basic MakeUp For Photography Part 1 (Black And White Photo).”

In B&W makeup photography, the only consideration that a makeup artist must have is to do away using shimmers, glitters, and the use of pieces of jewelry. The reason behind is that the light from the camera will only bounce back that will, later on, affect the result of the photo. On the other hand, using satin eyeshadow can be used.

So here are the things that you must consider for B&W makeup photography:

  1. Foundation: Must be medium to full coverage. It can also be a bit light.
  2. Contour: Must be 3-4 shades darker. Remember that this is a B&W photography so only light and shadow will play in the photo.
  3. Colors: White, grey, black.
  4. Eye Makeup Style: You can choose among the following like smokey, closed corner, or open corner.

Here’s my teacher’s model. On your left is the smoky eye makeup (closed eye makeup) and on the right is the nude makeup using open corner eye makeup.

Notes:

  • Considering lighting, makeup is darker than the usual application for precise and refine outcome.
  • Matte makeup is flattering for B&W photos.
  • Too much light diminishes the details of makeup. That is why it is best to have darker than normal contour and lighter than normal foundation.

The outcome of the makeup for B&W photo must achieve intensity, definition, and precision.

Now the tricky part is choosing the colors that will provide the desired outcome especially for the lips.

  1. For red outcome: use black/blue colors.
  2. For light shade: use pink/light pink.

How to do it?

  1. Spread and dab the foundation.
  2. Apply concealer for the undereye areas.
  3. Powder (loose) and dust it off.
  4. Contour–Also put contour or shadows on both sides of the temples and in the lower lip area.
  5. Highlight–nose and forehead.
  6. Apply primer on your eyelids.
  7. Use cream eyeshadows for the lids.
    • Don’t plenty of it since it will cake up.
    • You can blend it using your fingers.
  8. Put powder in the under eye area to prevent eyeshadow from sticking.
  9. Put black eyeshadow to the lids.
    • Blending using a blending brush to create a smoky effect.
    • Highlight.
    • Apply eye pencil on the lower lash line and underneath the lashes.
    • Set with black eyeshadow under the lash line using a dome brush.
    • Apply a little bit of highlight underneath the eyes.
    • Use eyeliner on the inner and upper lash line.
    • Use liquid liner on the upper lash line.
  10. Use falsies.
  11. Lips
    • Apply lip balm,
    • Put liner on lips (black/blue).
  12. Eyebrows
    • Black eyeliner will do.
    • fill it with black eye shadow.

Nude MakeUp For B&W

  1. Eyes
    • Use concealer as a base on your lids.
    • You can extend the concealer to the brow bone area.
    • Apply eye shadow. You can either choose from closed or open eye makeup.
    • Appy eyeliner in the upper lash line and lower lash line.
    • Blend it with eye shadow using a dome brush.
    • Apply mascara.

    • Use brown eyeshadow to fill in the eyebrows.
  3. Blush

I used the closed corner eye makeup for her. Notice that her lips look like that it has rep lipstick on. But that is only using a black eyeliner.

Sir Mio critiqued this photo and told me that the contour is not so visible. The lighting washed the color. That’s why it is very important to have the contour 3-4 times darker than the usual contour that we do.
