Blogging “Positively”: Blogging For HIV Awareness

Last Saturday, I delivered a talk for iBlog: The 11th Philippine Blogging Summit at the University of the Philippines College of Law. Being a neophyte in the blogging industry (I have been blogging for less than 2 years), I was so honored to share the stage with well-known professional bloggers, blogging authorities and media practitioners.

I gave a talk about Blogging “Positively”: Blogging For HIV Awareness. And I was very happy that it also coincided with the observance of the World AIDS Day.  So I want to share my deck and speech on that event with the hopes of doing away with the stigma towards HIV and imparting  the importance of blogging “positively.”

Note: This was my original speech but due to time constraints and nervousness (LOL), I forgot to mention most of what’s written in my original speech.

Good morning. I am Joemar Belleza, owner of BaklaPoAko.Com. Don’t worry, though. My blog is not a sort of a porn site that most people would associate it with. Before I start, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms. Janette Torral in giving me this opportunity to give this talk to my fellow bloggers and digital influencers. For those of you who are not aware, we are observing World AIDS Day every first of December all over the world including the Philippines. And this serves as a simple contribution for the HIV awareness efforts here in the country.

Before I proceed with my deck, I want to show you some photos that I found online in which you I have made rebuttals about with regards to the myths surrounding HIV in the country. Perhaps, some of you have seen this before.

Have you seen some of these before? These are just some of the things I found online that I believe these raised the stigma especially online surrounding HIV. But let me tell you as early as now that I am not putting the blame to these people posting these stuff. I, for one, got to know HIV when I transferred here in Manila when I was 21 years old. I also have the same stigma that they once have. But because I felt that HIV affected the MSM community (males having sex with males), I felt that there is a need for me to know it because I am part of the community. And if no one will study it, fight against the stigma, understand our PLHIV (people living with HIV) brothers and sisters, then nobody else will.

Then I asked myself this question:

When I went here in Manila, I became so acquainted and surrounded with the LGBT community specifically the MSM community. Then I observed that the  life of a gay man is a pendulum between love and death. Others are marrying despite it not being recognized here in the Philippines. While some succumbed because if something that seems to be the disease-that-should-not-be-named, AIDS.

And as a blogger, seeing the photos I have shown awhile ago, prompted me to use my influence online in combating the stigma surrounding HIV-AIDS. You might ask, why do I blog positively? Here are the 3 reasons why.

3) We all have our HIV status.

Janette Torral, blogging positively, blogging for hiv awareness, blog hiv philippines, iblog11, iblog philippines 2015, iblog 2015, hiv blog philippines, World AIDS Day 2015, World AIDS Day philippines, World AIDS Day effort by blogger, myths surrounding HIV, amv student hiv, baklapoako.com, bakla po ako, joemar belleza, unconditonally, unconditionally hiv unicef, katy perry unconditionally unicef, apple with hiv philippines, pineapple with hiv philippines, recto philippines hiv scare, Pia Wurtzbach, think before we click, Princess Diana hiv statement, hiv compassion, hiv love, hiv encouragement

As most of you know, there are only two HIV statuses, either negative of positive. For those HIV positive people, I just want to remind you that you can still live a quality life despite having HIV. Yes, you are tied to a health system like hypertension but it is also manageable. To those HIV negative, I hope that you still remain with the same status that you have in your lifetime and show compassion to those who will forever be HIV positive.

Straight or gay, we are all affected by HIV as it is now a societal problem that we are facing.

This is the latest statistic released by DOH’s Epidemiology Bureau in the rising case of HIV in the Philippines.

In Summary:

  • Of the 651, 327 cases came from the 25-34-year-old range against the usual front-runner age range of 15-24. 28/651 were females.
  • Of the 651, 323 cases were male-to-male sex, and 219 cases were sex with both males and females. There were 18 needle sharing and 1 case of mother-to-child transmission.
  • Of the 651 cases, 58 cases were overseas foreign workers. 73 cases, 2 of which females, were engaged in transactional sex.
  • Of the 651, there were 22 adolescents (2 females).
  • 50 deaths were reported. 48% of the deaths were from the 25-34 age range. 15 deaths were infected from needle sharing.
  • The red and black circles indicate the newly diagnosed cases per day in a given year.

Why am I showing these two scenarios to you?

2) We make an impact with every step we take, with every word we say.

And as bloggers and digital influencer, we can educate our readers and followers about the disease in a good light. Just what Pia Wurtzbach, Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 2015 said: “we must think before we click.” Indeed, we must.

The very first photos I have shown are all grounded in myths, misconceptions, and miseducation that led to stigma while the latter gives us a clearer picture of how alarming it is right now and yet we can still do something about it that leads to a solution.

And lastly, why do you really need to blog positively?

1) You don’t need to be HIV positive. You just need to be human.

Janette Torral, blogging positively, blogging for hiv awareness, blog hiv philippines, iblog11, iblog philippines 2015, iblog 2015, hiv blog philippines, World AIDS Day 2015, World AIDS Day philippines, World AIDS Day effort by blogger, myths surrounding HIV, amv student hiv, baklapoako.com, bakla po ako, joemar belleza, unconditonally, unconditionally hiv unicef, katy perry unconditionally unicef, apple with hiv philippines, pineapple with hiv philippines, recto philippines hiv scare, Pia Wurtzbach, think before we click, Princess Diana hiv statement, hiv compassion, hiv love, hiv encouragement

We will never know how is it to live life with HIV not unless we are in the shoe of PLHIV (people living with HIV). But one thing is for sure, we know how it feels to be loved. And what more love would PLHIV feel if they are given positive reinforcement despite the battle they’ve been struggling that’s associated with the virus.

Princess Diana once said: HIV doesn’t make people dangerous to know, so you can shake their hands and give them a hug. Heaven knows they need it.

And as a blogger, I hope that we start blogging “positively” in the hopes of alleviating, if not fully abolishing, the stigma towards HIV. Blogging is educating and education is spreading hope. Millions are now learning to live with HIV-AIDS — instead of waiting to die from it.

Now I want you to watch this video by UNICEF of a song entitled “Unconditionally” by Katy Perry. And I hope we also have unconditional acceptance to PLHIV.
