A “Tough Love” Reminder For PLHIV Not Adhering To ART

Being an HIV awareness advocate and running this blog with the major niche of spreading stigma-free resources about HIV, it’s nice to know that we are now in a generation where the internet is being utilized for more productive means to spread such information. One testament to this is how we use the prime mover and one of the four horsemen in the internet, Facebook. Fortunately, Facebook Groups are now being used for specific interests or pieces of information for a specific audience.

And to keep myself abreast with some progress, or even emerging issues at hand, about HIV, I joined HIV awareness support groups. As usual, many people are asking questions about HIV and some things connected (and even not connected) to it. Some questions are unnecessary but of course, the first step in curbing the spread of HIV is through education so answering questions is a must.

While browsing lately for information that I can blog about, I was able to come across a post which perhaps sounds to be harsh–or should we say tough love–to read. However, it speaks so much of the present reminder that hardheaded PLHIV in terms of their medication must all take note of.

There is much truth in this post. There’s no sugarcoating that was made to make the message come across as it is. Indeed, one’s health is one’s responsibility. Interestingly, it does not only apply to our PLHIV (people living with HIV) brothers and sisters but also for all of us to take good care of our health.

Now check out this infographic that will show HIV’s drug resistance when a PLHIV is or is not adhering to ARV.

I hope that our PLHIV brothers and sisters, especially those who are adamant in taking their ARVs and those who are doing away with their respective checkups, will realize how lucky they are that medications in the Philippines for HIV is free. And that they do not have the alibi to use to turn away from it. While it is true that there is still no cure for HIV, one can still live a quality life by being healthy and sticking with their medication.
