5 Worthy Lessons Learned As A Digital Marketer

E-commerce, or electronic commerce, is a force to be reckoned with in the Philippines. In one way or another, we have shopped in different online shopping platforms like Lazada, Metrodeal, CashCashPinoy, OLX and the like. In fact, 9 out 10 Filipinos shop online once a month according to Visa.

And as a digital marketer (for my LGBT online store, EqualiteePH.com) and a pink peso blogger (BaklaPoAko.com), I am very fortunate to attend Digital Filipino’s E-Commerce Entrepreneurs Summit Manila 2015 headed by Ms. Janette Toral.

So here some of my valuable takeaways from #ecomsummit that can help both digital marketers and buyers alike in understanding the facet of e-Commerce.

5) Filipinos are E-Consumers

The Philippines has been known as the “Social Networking Capital of the World” with 83 percent of Filipinos surveyed are members of a social network. (Statistic from study released by Universal McCann entitled “Power To The People – Wave3”).

Despite having a very slow internet, Philippines is still the Social Media Capital of the World.

More evidence? Eat Bulaga’s fictional loveteam “AlDub” (Alden Richards and Yaya Dub) has set a new all-time high record of 11.2 million tweets as of 7:02 p.m. on September 19, for its latest hashtag, #ALDUBMostAwaitedDate.

And if these tweets can be converted into peso, then Eat Bulaga can probably earn millions in just one day. And that’s the power of Filipinos using social media in their everyday lives. This is also true when it comes to the brands that we Filipinos patronize. We are fond of sharing (online and even thru word of mouth) things (both positive and negative) derived from our first-hand experience. But what gets far is the online remarks that we make of a certain product making as certified e-consumers.

4) There is NOTHING that you can’t sell online

Just like OLX’s famous tagline “Ang hindi mo na ginagamit, ibenta mo na!”, we surely have something that can be sold to our friends and in the online world. There will always be someone who will need a pre-loved bag, makeup brushes, baby crib and so on. Anything you need, OLX might have one of those.

It only boils down to finding the need/s of your target market or just arousing their needs a little bit more.

3) The four horsemen that brought paradigm change in digital marketing: Facebook, Google, Amazon, & Apple

The Four Horsemen usually refers to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, who are the forces of man’s destruction as described in the Christian Bible in chapter six of the Book of Revelation.

But we also have four horsemen counterparts in the modern world right now which brought a paradigm change in digital marketing. These are Facebook (that changed what you discover socially), Google (how you define things), Amazon (the way you shop) and Apple (how your mobile screen must be measured). In one way or another, any of these four or probably all of these have affected you once in your life, right?

2) In today’s modern world, people are either asleep or connected

This is actually so self-explanatory. You probably know why you are reading this in the first place. So let’s move on to my #1 takeaway. 😉

1) Learning is an investment

E-Commerce is widely known globally. But there are still plenty of things that we are yet to learn in an ever-changing world of e-commerce. So if you really want to set yourself apart and ahead in the race of digital marketers, then you must arm yourself with the necessary know-hows, what-nots and how-tos that are being offered from time to time.

One of the best havens of these pieces of information can be provided by Digital Filipino of Ms. Janette Toral. Check out their site here for future workshops, seminars and courses that can indeed upgrade your skills in a competitive world of e-commerce.
